not exactly johnny depp

Apparently Somalian Pirates are only in it for the money (really? shocker!) and eat ” you know, normal human-being food.”

Thanks, Jon.

alternate side parking is suspended for the next 4 days for religious holidays that i don’t participate in…this probably means nothing to most people, but for someone who feels the need to inform his friends and family whenever he obtains an optimal parking spot, this is grounds for celebration…i need a festivus like name for this new found holiday that i shall enjoy for the next 4 days…ideas?

look at me - no hands!

Yeah, so this is what I did to the computer last night. In my defense, the computer was on it’s last pinky toe (not even a leg) and there was a bug involved. Not that that’s an excuse…

And you know what really pisses me off? I hadn’t even pulled the latest Jenny Lewis album onto my iPod yet!

that’s it - i’m totally quitting

I’ll be traveling with Thom from now on. Especially when there are Great Danes staying at his hotel.

Not fair.

new york daydreams

I don’t mind going to visit my clients when they have small birch forests in their office buildings. Plus I can always pick up a few pens. Too bad I wasn’t there for all the excitement.

i can’t hear you

Sometimes when the client has called for the fifth time that day reporting some bizarre bug on the site and the tech guy has informed me he is not going to be sticking around to help me out of this mess and I’m just in general feeling like I’m doing a really lousy job well, then, I need to listen to music really, really loud.

Today - thanks to Thom downloading the new album and seeing them on SNL this weekend - it was all Kings of Leon. Turn it up.

i am taking up a collection

Ever since our little trip to the Hamptons I’ve been fixated on the idea of a vacation home. Forget traveling to Croatia, Iceland and Belize. I’ll take a nice serene shack of my own instead. Somewhere where the air is sweeter, cleaner and quiet.

We’re looking into renting a place in the Catskills this winter as a trial run. Probably one of many trial runs to see if we can live the quiet life, at least on the weekends.

And then I saw this -

And it comes with the friggin’ furniture? I’m so there. [More pics]

Length of stay will be directly proportional to size of donation towards the purchase of the house.

keeping up with the smiths

A few weeks ago we celebrated our 2 year anniversary in the house. Well, perhaps “celebrated” is the wrong term. It was more like mourning the loss of where we thought we would be right about now. We’re still sitting in a house with holes in the floors, peeling paint and window frames that let in the breeze even when closed.

Thankfully we find inspiration in our friends. Jennifer and Dirk have recently moved into a gorgeous house in Sarasota, Florida. It looks so nice we might just visit. Here’s what Jennifer had to say…

As much as Dirk and I would love to live in a big city, we do enjoy our peaceful life in Sarasota. One of the best things about living in Sarasota is its adorable downtown and beautiful beaches, of course. In July, while driving around in one of our favorite neighborhoods, we happened to pass this house on Alta Vista Street, just behind the Selby Botanical Gardens and short stroll to downtown.

The house, or cottage, was built in 1925 with hardwood floors throughout, a sun porch, a fireplace, eat-in kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms. Sometime later a master suite was added on the back of the house. So not only is this house in a great location, its historic charm really sold us. We like historic things, especially mid-century modern furniture, as you’ll see. So, on July 4th we decided to make the move and thus began a new project, or should I say several new projects. With some financial help from our landlord, we were able to update the house before we moved in and really took advantage of the extra time.

Although this house has more square footage than our last place, the rooms are smaller, which forced use to make decisions about our furniture. We knew that the living room would be a tight squeeze. First we painted the walls caramel and the fireplace eggshell. Then all we had to do was move in our stuff. Although the room is narrow, it does give us a great place to highlight our Paul McCobb coffee table. We found it at a steal in an antique shop in downtown St. Petersburg. The wonderful little side chair is another original mid-century piece that I found at a consignment shop in Sarasota . It’s perfect for petite people and has been quite a hit with our guests. The footstool was a yard sale find and the lamps are from Target and Ikea. I love a good deal!

After:

We decided to take the smallest of the three bedrooms and make it our formal dining room. It’s a great place for our Heywood Wakefield dining set with the Sting Ray Chairs! We found the set on Craig’s List. Dirk drove to Orlando to pick it up while I was out of town and surprised me with it. I’m so lucky! Other than that we just replaced the fan with a light fixture (Fado) from Ikea that we had purchased over a year ago and never found a place for in our old house.

Perhaps the biggest job was what we did in the main bathroom. I tackled it first because I despised it so much. Let me tell you painting over hunter green is tough work. After the painting was completed, I sanded and repainted the trim, and re-caulked around the tub and windows. Then I replaced the dated light fixtures with these modern chrome ones from Home Depot and replaced the hunter green shower bar. Then Dirk added the towel bars and we replaced the door pulls and were done! Voila, a beautiful yellow bathroom that doesn’t make me want to puke.

After:

Without a main front door, we decided to use the sun porch as our entry area. This room was just plain white but after we painted it in matte metal blue, the white trim of the windows makes it more dramatic. Of course, since this is Dirk’s office, it’s filled with sheet music and a heavy piano. Then we replaced the light fixtures with more contemporary ones. Due to the cozy rug under the desk, this is Nugget’s favorite room.

The guest room, off of the office, was a real project. When we first moved in it was painted in neon yellow, with multi-colored bookshelf supports with dinosaur wallpaper border to tie it all together. What a nightmare! At first we planned on leaving this room for the end, but Dirk surprised me two weeks ago and painted it! Then we found a place for our Barcelona chair and ottoman for our guests comfort.

Before:

After:

The master suite didn’t need much work, except for in the bathroom. Here we painted the light pink walls to blue and the light pink matching trim to white. Then I spray painted the rusted light fixture.

So at the end of it all, here’s the tally: We replaced 5 light fixtures, 5 ceiling fans, painted 5 rooms put in over 40 hours of work and took almost 6 weeks to get fully moved in. Go figure. In the end, we are very happy and waiting for our guests to start making reservations!

Nugget!
